In the Netherlands, you can bet on sports matches at TOTO and Runnerz. Not every form of sports betting is allowed. Think of a red card or a foul on an opponent. Also, other easily manipulated game moments, such as a penalty, may not be used.
Betting on the news (event betting)
Do you want to bet money on the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest, the weather during a football match, or the color of a striker’s football boots? That’s not allowed. Because the result can be influenced or the result cannot be properly assessed.
Betting on esports
e-Sports are online sports through computer games. Think, for example, of online matches via FIFA. Wagering money on this type of sports competition is not allowed. Because the racecourse is easy to influence.
Fixed Odds vs Spread Betting
Fixed odds bets, like now with the TOTO, are and will remain allowed. The outcome of your bet is whether you win or lose. You know before the match what payout you will get if you win the match. In other words: you know in advance what the odds are. With Spread betting, there are more options than just ‘win or lose’. You bet your money on a range of outcomes. For example, you bet that the spread for the total number of goals is above or below 2.5 and 3.0. How much you win or lose depends on how far below or above you have bet. The more right you are, the more you win, but the more you are wrong, the more you lose.
