Sefton 14 Destination Kirkby 0

Sefton Council Earlier this evening all fourteen members of Sefton Councils planning committee voted to object to Knowsley Councils Destination Kirkby project. Unanimous cross party support for the objection saw six Lib Dems, four Labour and four Conservative Councillors unite in their opposition to the audacious plan by Tesco to build a retail complex that is simply too big for Kirkby.

Additional concerns were raised regarding the associated transport plan but perhaps the most devastating news of the night for Tesco and Kirkby's Councillors was the again unanimous approval of a resolution to contact the Secretary of State Hazel Blears and ask for a public inquiry.

This action is also a major embarrassment for local MP George Howarth whose constituency includes the businesses and residents in East Sefton that he has ignored.

*Ian Moncur declared an interest as a Everton season ticket holder.
