The Future Of Sports Betting Regulation In Europe

For years, gambling and sports betting had been a subject of debate in terms of legality and risks among its players. This includes online gambling activities such as xe88. Governments from all over the world are setting laws and other legislation that restricts the industry. And yet despite restrictions, there’s a surge of betting activities from an uncontrollable environment, the black market.

The Future of Sports Betting

In October, experts will be discussing the future of sports betting regulation in Europe at the Betting on Sports Europe digital conference. The event is announced as

“(…) the main conference for European sports betting operatives, offering a discussion board for high-level conversations that will aid shape the future of the betting industry.”

In addition to regulations in Italy, Sweden, and the Netherlands, sports betting legislation in Germany will also be a topic of the conference.

Sports betting in the shadow of the new State Treaty on Gambling

The regulation of sports betting in Europe is currently a double-edged sword. On the one hand, providers and industry associations praise the start of issuing nationwide sports betting permits. On the other hand, the guidelines of the State Treaty on Gaming, which will come into force on July 1, 2021, present numerous challenges for sports betting providers.

Representatives of the media group Sport1 Medien AG and the gambling companies Kindred Group and Bet It Best will discuss the hurdles for marketing and advertising in particular on Wednesday. The focus will be on the perspective of partner programs (“Affiliates”).

The future of affiliates in Europe is currently in the balance. The survival of the programs is at risk mainly due to new advertising regulations. For example, the draft of the new State Treaty on Gambling stipulates that “in the form of affiliate links (…) no variable remuneration, in particular sales, deposit or stake-dependent remuneration may be agreed or paid” for advertising.

Among other things, the question is whether a “green” version of affiliate marketing could be created that takes into account the mutual interests of regulators and companies.

The transition phase for online gambling

During the conference, the transition phase until the new State Treaty on Gambling comes into force will also be discussed. It has begun on October 15, 2020, and currently raises many questions.

The aim of the Betting on Sports Europe conference is to clarify how online sports betting companies can implement official guidelines during this time in order to operate in accordance with the rules on the European online sports betting market.
